In 2009, Hanna Sandin began selling her handmade necklaces at Mc & Co, a small, artist-run store in Williamsburg. That same year, she went to a party and met the designer and boutique owner Maryam Nassir Zadeh, who was drawn to Sandin’s oversize mesh loop necklace — and, soon after, invited her to sell her pieces in the store. Sandin graduated with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, with a focus on glass and has worked for the artist Michael Joo, for whom she produced sculptures and installations. There, she learned that sculpture and jewelry design could go hand in hand. “I think my advantage comes from my work as an artist, the sensibility of the line is deeply rooted in my own sense of material play in my studio,” she says. For inspiration these days, she has been studying the work of female sculptors from the ’70s, including Eva Hesse.
